What can you expect from your lessons?

Before we start I will meet with you, and if young, with your parents/ carers. We wil discuss what is expected, how to practice, and to make sure we all work together to get the best from you.

Piano lessons are usually one to one, but any opportunities to play with others will be encouraged.

Parents and families are very important for any young person to learn effectively, and are encouraged to be involved as much as they would like. Regular contact will be maintained and parents are more than welcome to observe the lessons.

The lessons will include the following:
• Learning to play and enjoy the piano and/or keyboard in a fun and interactive way
• Learning effective approaches to practising and improving
• Listening to music
• Ensuring a good technique and posture, including relaxation exercises
• Developing improvisation
• Developing general theory, rhythmic and harmonic approaches to enhance your playing
• Encouragement to enter LRAM/ LTCL Exams (both classical and jazz) which help you improve and develop, and commit you to be disciplined and challenged
• Opportunities to play to, and with, others
• Developing performance skills and always exploring opportunities to do so

Research has demonstrated that learning a musical instrument develops many cognitive skills that can be used elsewhere in life. Some people do not want to do exams, or to perform in public. The importance of learning is to feel able to improve in the best way that suits your needs.

Whatever your age- you can learn the piano/ keyboard. Generally young people are ready to learn from the age of approximately 8 upwards, and many of my pupils are adults who come back to the piano after learning when they were young, or have always wanted to learn but did not get the opportunity before.
